All hail the Gingerbread Man!

Organizers say 69-year-old Carl Enlow died after being hit by a helicopter rotor at the Bloomsburg Fair! The fair’s superintendent of police and parking says the helicopter was refueling when Enlow went back to speak to the pilot who relieved him. Bill Barratt says Enlow’s hat blew off his head and he was struck by the rotor when he reached for it. Barratt says Enlow was an experienced pilot who had flown helicopters in the military; his death is under investigation.

gingerbread manPolice in California said 13 motorists were cited in an operation involving a deputy dressed in a Gingerbread Man costume. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the costumed deputy walked back and forth across a Moreno Valley crosswalk for about 50 minutes and 13 motorists were cited for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.  Sgt. Bill Guimont said most of the motorists told deputies they didn’t notice the Gingerbread Man in the crosswalk in front of Rainbow Springs
Elementary School. “Our concern is if they can’t see a 7-foot Gingerbread Man, then how are they going to see their son or daughter that is only 5 feet tall walking through a crosswalk,” Guimont said.  True, but would it have been more obvious if it were in downtown traffic?

Santa Ana police said Jose Manuel Ortiz, 35, and Ryan Irwin Tischer, 37, met while being released from the Orange County Jail around 7:20 p.m. and they allegedly stole a 1994 Ford van a few hours later! Then the men drove the stolen van to a parking garage between the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Santa Ana Police Department where they burglarized a police jailer’s vehicle! At that moment an off-duty officer came into the parking structure while having a conversation on his phone around 12:10 a.m. and Ortiz allegedly charged him and demanded he hand over the phone.  The officer overpowered Ortiz and took him into custody. The booking officer at the jail then recognized his own property among the items taken from Ortiz. The other guy, Tischer was found standing next to the stolen van a short time later (I guess he just wandered off when all of this was happening??)  and was taken into custody. Both men were charged with grand theft auto
