John Harrelson/Getty Images(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) -- Tony Stewart survived a vicious multi-car crash at the end fo the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday to pick up the checkered flag.
The crash occured on the final lap when Kyle Larson's car went airborne into the frontstretch catch fencing, sheering off the front half of the car. Large pieces of the vehicle were left inside the fencing and out on the grandstand.
ESPN is reporting that 15 spectators were injured.
"We're always made aware of the fact that we don't know everything," NASCAR President Mike Helton said of the safety involved in the sport.
"It's a hard thing for NASCAR, there's no easy solution, there never has been," Stewart said in Victory Lane. "NASCAR's a extremely smart group and they're doing everything they can to keep this from happening and that's the main thing."
Sam Hornish Jr. finished in second.
